Dear Quogue,

We are residents joining together to help save Quogue from the continuing loss of its historic character.

Quogue residents see it every day: mistakes, missed opportunities, and the gradual erosion of the Village’s historic fabric. That erosion was once slow. It is now accelerating. Speculators recognize Quogue as an easy target.

Many residents share our concern that Quogue’s historic character is steadily disappearing.

Until recently, we assumed the Village government was doing all it could to protect Quogue’s heritage. Following the 2016 listing of the Quogue Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places, with 248 “contributing” properties, we assumed the Village had strengthened its protections.

We were wrong.

Beginning in Fall 2025, following Village approval of a new house with little recognizable historic connection at the prominent corner of Quogue Street and Beach Lane, we examined Quogue’s Code, procedures, and record of action and compared them with neighboring Hamptons communities.

What we found was alarming: Quogue lags far behind.

Many neighboring communities - including Southampton, East Hampton, Sag Harbor, Bridgehampton, Water Mill, Springs, and Amagansett - have much stronger protections that restrict demolition and closely scrutinize new construction that threatens historic character.

For Quogue Village’s leadership, this is a matter of choice.

They rarely choose to use the full authority the existing code can reasonably be interpreted to grant, while also declining to amend the code to remove any doubt about that authority.

The mission of SAVE QUOGUE is to bring like-minded residents together to send a powerful message to the Village government that it can and must do better.

Let’s save Quogue before it’s too late.
